Feeding and Empowering Families in Our Community

For many families right now, seeking food assistance at Crossroads is not an IF, but a WHEN.

From inflation at the grocery store to the reduction of SNAP benefits, rising layoffs, and the reduction of childcare credits, an increasing number of households are one missed paycheck away from experiencing food insecurity. At Crossroads, we see first-hand how these economic stressors impact the families we serve.

Amid this steady rise in the cost of living, we now serve over 300 households a week, in just 4 hours a day, 4 days per week.

No Kid Hungry Texas recently found that “two in five parents have experienced food insecurity in the past 12 months and more than a quarter reported they worried they would not have enough food for their households due to lack of money or other resources.”

The constant stress of figuring out how to stay afloat between paying bills AND having enough to eat takes a toll on every member of the family.

Our solution is simple: relieve the burden of food budgeting for low-income families who visit our Community Market.

Frederic says that when he and his wife “started going through a little trouble,” they learned about Crossroads from the volunteers at the Stewpot. “Me and my wife went, and we’ve been going there ever since. Crossroads helps you out a lot.”

Crossroads is a regional leader in building nutrition-stable communities, one family at a time. We are proud to serve families like Frederic’s, who have been coming to Crossroads for years and have recently benefited from our From Food to Finances program.

Frederic, his wife, and his two high-school-aged children utilize our Market services to help with their grocery bill. They also receive nutritional and financial coaching, specific to their individual needs and benefiting the entire family.

“Nutrition coaching helped us a lot,” he says. “It helped us maintain our weight, learn more about the right things to eat for us. My daughter is on the rugby team, and nutrition coaching is showing her the best, healthiest way to help with her training.”

The financial coaching they’ve received has also made an incredible impact on their family, by helping them manage their household budget and advising them on strategies for spending and saving.

“For the first time in my [life],” says Frederic, “I was getting the help I needed — I needed this.”

To Frederic and his family, Crossroads is a lifeline. “They are always there to help. There’s just so much to say about [this] organization. They’re nice. They’re helpful. They are the best in the world.”

Frederic encourages others to support Crossroads because “it helps [our] community,” he says. “If they’re disabled like I am, don't have much income, Crossroads helps. Look at our community, our community is struggling. Places like Crossroads help us through this misfortune.”

Reaching food security has a transformative impact on a person’s health and wellbeing.

In April, Frederic and nine other participants are set to graduate from our From Food to Finances program. We are proud to celebrate this special milestone with them.

We are grateful to have the support of so many friends, volunteers, and donors in our community who share our commitment to providing consistent access to nutritious food. Our work would not be possible without you.

This spring, we’re asking supporters like you to consider making a gift of $25, $50, or $100 as a monthly donor, or $250 - $1,000 as a one-time impact gift. Your generosity will help us feed and empower more families in our community.
